Racial debates continue in Melbourne

The debate on racism against Indians in Melbourne continue as the The Delhi Mail published a cartoon aimed at Victorian police.image

The caption “We Are Yet To Ascertain The Nature Of The Crime." , The cartoon show a Ku Klux Klan member with a Victorian Police badge.

I think this is very unfair on the homicide squad who are working tireless to find the murderer of Nitin Garg. Nitin Garg was stabbed on his way to work last Saturday in West Melbourne.

The Indian community claims the stabbing was a racial attack on the Indian community. The Victorian police and the Victorian Government are denying that theory.  They state the killer or the race of the killer has not been identified so it hard to establish the motive behind the killing.

Australia takes murder very seriously and Australian Police Forces are renowned for success in finding murderers. This is a serious crime not just for the Indian community but for all Australians. Given the political problems of this crime the Victorian Police will be under extreme scrutiny on how it conducts this investigation. I am sure all available resources would be given to this case to help bring the matter to a conclusion not only for governments but for the community.

The Australian education system are experiencing a downturn in the lucrative overseas student market because of the continuing problems of attacks on Indian students. This would give rise to the Government to play down the problem of racism in the Western Suburb of Melbourne.

The ABC 730 Report ran a story on the police new powers to search for concealed weapons on people in certain locations in Victoria.  The first scene was of police searching a African person.

The Western Suburb of Melbourne attract many nationalities because of the lower cost of accommodation.  The concentration of multicultural suburbs creates many problems for the community with integrating  these cultures into the Australian way of life.  The policing is very difficult when new arrivals come with political and racial views from their place of origin. Victorian Police have to be seen as non racial and impartial to any group although behind closed doors this may be different.

Living in a rural community of Victoria in recent years we have seen many Indians’ become a part of our community. They are usually very educated and professional people.  Violence in our community is normally between white Australians and fuelled by alcohol.

The University of Ballarat has put in place a program to attract overseas students and promotes the communities where the University has Campuses as safe. University of Ballarat vice-chancellor David Battersby said on ABC Radio  that;

The Ballarat community has programs in place to help international students. The University sends an information pack to all their overseas students giving them advise of services and the community. The local Council and Police work with the University on integrating overseas students.

The risk of moving students to rural areas may infract bring with the problems of the Western Suburbs.
